(22) How easy it is to learn Portuguese if you already speak Spanish? - Quora
Still on that note, if you are not a native speaker of Spanish, however, it will be extremely difficult to retain both languages. It is likely that you will learn one very well and forget about the other; or at the very least, one of them will surely suffer. The good news is, the knowledge you possess will only be dormant.

(English is not a Latin language, but since this would be too long to discuss, suffice it to say that English would be the most Latin among the Germanic languages; whereas French, the most Germanic among the Latin ones).
You just need to immerse yourself enough in a given culture until you get that (language) system extremely fixed in your mind. If you only half-learn languages, it means you never get them fossilized (linguistics term for “solidified, so as not to suffer future change”) in your head, and knowledge is still wobbly, you will always feel confused about things. You will make mistakes often and always, until you actually stop and think about the (language) system you are using and learn it once and for all. It’s like learning to play the guitar. If you rush through your scales, you might always deliver solos in a sloppy fashion. To sound clean you would have to go back to basics and do it really slowly until you can do it faster while still playing only one note per sweep of your pick (and wherein each note will not sound smudged or muffled, but clear, even in the face of high speeds). You can do that quickly because you mastered the basics first, gradually getting faster as you used your metronome.
Let me put it this way: if you already know how to play six stringed instruments (viola, violin, guitar etc.), it might still be hard to learn how to play drums, but it will still be easier than if you had never learned any musical instrument at all. No matter how different they are, there are things that are basic to all. In the same way that you will already know about rhythm, cadence, notation (and so on) when you learn drums, after learning stringed instruments first, so also will you be able to produce more sounds by using your voice apparatu
